After working on Hammock on and off for the past year, we decided to shut it down. Why?

It started last November when we wanted to build something together. Having just subscribed to a ton of new Substacks, we couldn’t find a product to read and learn from them all that we’d like. As we spoke with many of you who kindly shared your time with us and showed us how you read and learn, we became passionate about brainstorming better ways to read on the internet.

Over time, we started forcing ourselves to come up with a bigger (and VC fundable) vision for Hammock. But when we met up in San Francisco in October to work together, we realized that we’re not excited about this vision, and that is far from the reason we started.

We had a lot of fun along the way, met many great people including Nicholas, who helped us build the reader, and learned a lot. So thank you for all your support.

Reading and learning is something we still care about, so we’re excited about the new wave of apps in this space. We met the founders of Readwise who are genuinely some of the nicest people, and we’ve both been beta testing their new Reader over the last few weeks.

Readwise Reader: The first read-it-later app built for power readers.

As for Hammock, we’ve moved the code to an open source GitHub repository, so if you’re a builder interested in this space, you can check it out here:

If you want to reach out or follow along for any future ideas we may work on together, you can find us both on Twitter @jurajpal @martinsrna

Thanks again! 🙇🏻
